The objective of KOREAN was the development of a methodology to construct reference models. Important aspects were the ability to configure conceptual models (by adding rules that allow an automatic configuration based on project-specific values) and the specification of rules that can represent multiple organizations and application scenarios. The implementation of the concept into software tools was also part of the project. As result of the project, a framework was developed that supports conceptual modeling on three level of abstraction: models, configuration techniques and development stages. Additionally, models, meta-models (describing the language of a conceptual model) and meta-meta-models (describe the language of a meta-model) were developed to derive model variants based on the subjective information needs or preferences of different stakeholders of the model. The concept was evaluated in retail and customer integration scenarios in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin. The project results provide model developers with various suggestions on how to improve their conceptual modeling tools. The research was conducted as part of the joint project BRID (Managerial Reference-Information Models for Service Companies).
